In het Ballastplaatbos, onderdeel van Nationaal Park Lauwersmeer, liepen we de Observatietorenroute: een wandeling van zo\u2019n 5,2 kilometer. Het gebied ligt op voormalige zeebodem en bestaat uit afwisselend bos en open vlaktes met water. We begonnen bij Activiteitencentrum Lauwersnest, waar we eerst even een bakkie koffie en een appelkoek scoorden. Vanaf het centrum lopen verschillende routes, waaronder <\/span>wandelroute planetenpad<\/span><\/a>. Voor de observatietoren volgden we de blauwe paaltjes op een dijk langs een weg. We hoopten niet dat dit de hele tijd zo zou zijn, maar gelukkig liep de route snel het bos in.<\/p>\n

<\/span>Het landschap wisselde eigenlijk steeds. De ene keer liepen we langs verschillende soorten bomen en verderop kwamen we langs stukken met uitzicht over open water waar een paar vogels in het water dobberen.<\/p>\n

<\/span>Halverwege kwamen we aan bij de observatietoren. We klommen even naar boven, al voelde het houten platform een beetje krakkemikkig. De bovenste delen ontbreken sinds een brand, maar vanaf het onderste niveau kun je nog steeds over het water uitkijken. Geen spectaculair panorama, maar wel een gezellig uitzicht over het water waar watervogels rondzwemmen.<\/p>\n

<\/span>Niet lang daarna kwamen we ook nog langs een vogelkijkhut, aan een rustige plas. Het laatste stuk van de route ging weer terug over het dijkje langs de weg. Op de route zijn honden niet toegestaan en dat merk je wel aan hoe rustig het er is. De paden waren goed begaanbaar, al zouden ze bij nat weer wat zompig kunnen worden. Stevige schoenen of laarzen zijn dus handig als het geregend heeft. De afwisseling tussen bos en water maakt het niet een spectaculaire, maar wel een fijne route.<\/span><\/p>\n
