Op een dinsdagavond, net voordat het ging schemeren, parkeerden we de auto aan de Eyckensteinselaan, op de grens tussen Maartensdijk en Bilthoven. Hier ligt De Leyen, een gebied dat bestaat uit gemengd bos en agrarische grond. Naast de parkeerplaats ligt het Verloren Kerkhof, dat in 1874 is aangelegd en waar daklozen en zwervers werden begraven na de Tweede Wereldoorlog. We bleven even stilstaan met de gekke gedachte dat dit ooit een begraafplaats was. Nadat we het eerste rode paaltje hadden gevonden, liepen we een breed pad op waar aan weerszijden van hoge beuken stonden.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span>Na een paar honderd meter moesten we een van de vele paadjes die links en rechts kronkelden volgen en liepen we een stukje door het bos, waarna we op een volgend laantje met beuken terechtkwamen. Aan de rand van het pad lagen een paar huizen en we fantaseerden hoe heerlijk het moet zijn om zo dicht bij het bos te wonen. Een nieuw kronkelend paadje het bos in bracht ons weer terug op de eerste beukenlaan.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span>Een beetje bang dat we tussen beukenlaan 1 en beukenlaan 2 zouden hoppen, kwamen we toch langs een stuk boerengrond. In het andere stuk bos kwamen we hoge dennenbomen tegen die de laatste zonnestralen van de dag vingen. Na een stukje door het bos te hebben gewandeld, kwamen we weer op een breed pad terecht. Het is een leuk rondje dat waarschijnlijk nog leuker is in het voorjaar omdat de bomen dan weer in volle bloei zijn. Vleermuizen, spechten en uilen gebruiken de oude beuken als huisje en ook de boommarter leeft in dit gebied, maar helaas hebben wij deze alleen de specht mogen bewonderen.\u00a0<\/p>\n
