Marnie is eenzaam na een mislukt huwelijk en stort zich op haar werk terwijl het leven aan haar voorbij lijkt te gaan. Michael zoekt de eenzaamheid juist zoveel mogelijk op nadat zijn leven ondersteboven gehaald werd en zijn vrouw hem verliet. Beiden worden door een gemeenschappelijke vriendin uitgenodigd – die de hoofdpersonen wil helpen van hun eenzaamheid af te komen –\u00a0 om met een groep het Coast-to-Coast-pad te gaan wandelen. Een soort zeer risicovolle blind date. Bijna iedereen haakt dan ook af, wanneer het Engelse weer doet wat het Engelse weer het beste doet. Je bent hier<\/span><\/i> leest heerlijk weg, met de typisch Engelse humor, die Nicholls als geen ander op papier weet te zetten. Ook laat hij de wandeling zelf echt tot leven komen. Je kunt bijna verdrinken in de prachtige landschappen, maar zeker ook hopeloos verzuipen in de Engelse regen. Alleen al hierom is dit boek het waard om gelezen te worden, want voor het plot hoef je dat niet te doen. Je ziet van mijlenver al aankomen hoe dit verhaal gaat eindigen.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span>De thema\u2019s \u2018eenzaamheid\u2019 en \u2018alleen zijn\u2019 staan centraal in dit werk. Marnie en Michael tasten in het verhaal de balans hiertussen af en de verbinding die ze uiteindelijk vinden, zorgt bij beide personages voor enorme ontwikkelingen. Nicholls is meester in het beschrijven van persoonlijke groei, maar paradoxaal genoeg missen de personages wat diepgang en dat maakt het soms lastig om je met ze te identificeren.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span>Je bent hier<\/span><\/i> is een boek dat je op twee manieren kunt lezen: enerzijds is het een leuke romance, die zich afspeelt in een prachtige omgeving en vanwege het gebrek aan plot is het daarom een ideaal vakantieboek, zij het een beetje saai. Anderzijds kun je dit boek lezen als een diepgaand verhaal over gekwetste mensen die hun eenzaamheid uit \u2018kruipen\u2019 en stilletjes aan de verbinding weer durven aan te gaan. Wanneer je het op die manier leest, is het een prachtig boek. En anders moet je gegarandeerd een paar keer lachen om die heerlijke Britse humor.<\/span><\/p>\n
