Tussen de bossen van Zeist, Driebergen en Austerlitz ligt Landgoed Heidestein, een natuurgebied gekenmerkt door stuifzanden, bossen en heide. We parkeerden de auto langs een weg, aangezien er geen parkeerplaats was, en liepen een paar honderd meter tot we de rode paaltjes zagen. Het begin van deze route bracht ons door een bos met hoge en oude bomen. Mooi weer was ons op deze zomeravond helaas niet gegund, maar door de regen was alles net iets groener en de dennennaalden op de paden waren net iets bruiner, waardoor het leek alsof er achter elke boom een hobbit kon staan.<\/span><\/p>\n

Al redelijk enthousiast over het sprookjesachtige bos, liepen we langs een uit 1884 stammende schaapskooi, die tegenwoordig wordt gebruikt als informatiecentrum. Er staan picknicktafels waar je lekker je bammetje kan opeten terwijl je naar de schaapjes kijkt die hier rondhuppelen.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pratend over de bordjes met de boomnamen die bij de bomen stonden, liepen we tegen een grote vijver aan. Dobberende eenden en kwakende kikkers verwelkomden ons. \u201cDat is toch net Dumbledore\u2019s Island?\u201d vroeg Violet, wijzend naar een eilandje met hoge bomen in het midden van de vijver. \u201cNou, inderdaad!\u201d antwoordde ik. Toen we de nodige kiekjes hadden geschoten, vervolgden we onze weg langs de vijver. We zagen een tunnel waar boven de ingang een rhododendronstruik groeide, ook dit poortje kon uit een fantasiefilm komen. De tunnel leek door een soort heuvel te lopen waarop een prachtig, oud huisje stond. Een oud theehuis, zo bleek later. We twijfelden even of we wel door de tunnel konden omdat het een donker gat leek, maar na de eerste paar stappen zagen we al letterlijk het licht aan het einde van de tunnel. We liepen een stukje over een pad voordat we weer een iets langere tunnel in liepen en weer bij de vijver uitkwamen.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nadat we een brug hadden overgestoken, over een hek waren geklommen en een zandpad hadden gevolgd, ging het bos over in heide. Een uitgestrekte vlakte met veel zand en heideplanten. We moesten een ander pad volgen vanwege het hoge water, maar hoefden niks van het uitzicht te missen omdat er geen bomen stonden. Ook op de heide was een mooie vijver te vinden en daarna konden we weer op de gebruikelijke route stappen, richting het einde van de route. Gelukkig maar, want de druppels begonnen toch wel wat harder uit de lucht te vallen. Voldaan kwamen we bij de auto, we waren het er over eens: de route was prachtig.
