Het Zwanenwater staat erom bekend dat het de twee grootste duinmeren van West-Europa bevat. Het gebied is rijk aan vogels en als je eind mei komt schijnen er duizenden prachtige orchidee\u00ebn te bloeien. Helaas hadden wij te weinig research gedaan van tevoren en waren we er op een grauwe decemberdag. Maar gelukkig hebben grijze luchten en de diepgroene kleur van natgeregende planten ook zo hun charme. We volgden de gele paaltjes, de Langs het Eerste Water-route van 2,5 km. Er loopt nog een route door het gebied, eentje van 5,8 km. Het grondwater stond enorm hoog toen we aankwamen bij het Zwanenwater in Callantsoog. We hadden al een waarschuwing op de website van Natuurmonumenten zien staan en bovendien hing er een briefje op het bord met de routebeschrijving dat het verstandig was om je laarzen aan te trekken. Dapper klommen we op onze redelijk waterdichte wandelschoenen een eerste duintje over. \u201cHier zitten blauwborstjes!\u201d vertelde Josien enthousiast, terwijl ze haar verrekijker in de aanslag hield. \u201cHoe zien die eruit?\u201d vroeg ik haar, terwijl we een weidse open plek doorkruisden. Even keek ze me met opgetrokken wenkbrauw aan. \u201cAls een roodborstje\u2026 Maar dan dus blauw.\u201d Aha.<\/p>\n

<\/span>De gele paaltjes zouden ons naar \u00e9\u00e9n van de grote duinmeren leiden, Het Eerste Water, maar al snel bleek dat de doorgang werd ons al snel versperd door het hoge grondwater. Natuurmonumenten had zeker niet overdreven, maar zelfs met laarzen hadden we niet verder gekund. Een bikini was een v\u00e9\u00e9l betere optie geweest.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ja, we hebben de route dus vrij snel opgegeven, maar gelukkig waren we nog veel delen van het gebied w\u00e9l begaanbaar. En die waren toch wel echt prachtig, maar misschien ben ik een beetje bevooroordeeld want ik heb een grote zwakte voor die reep natuur langs de kust waar het bos overgaat in de duinen. Bovendien schijnt er ook nog een fantastische, drijvende vogelhut te zien te zijn, maar die was helaas afgezet toen wij er waren. Een prachtige plek, maar vast veel beter op een ander moment.\u00a0<\/p>\n
