Ten westen van het dorpje Maarn ligt het bos van Stameren met daarnaast een gebied dat ooit door de NS is afgegraven, de Zanderij. Een grote hap uit de stuwwal die de Utrechtse Heuvelrug is. Deze stuwwal lag vol met zwerfstenen en -keien en de stenen die opgegraven zijn, staan als een soort aardrijkskundig monument op het Zwerfsteneneiland. De route die we liepen, loopt door beide natuurgebieden en over een groot open veld. Eerst liepen we over verschillende paadjes door het bos van Stameren. Deze weggetjes waren soms niet heel goed begaanbaar en dat maakt dat het pad zeker niet geschikt is voor kinderwagens of rolstoelen. Op de koude en gure januaridag dat wij hier wandelden zag het bos er een beetje grauw en kaal uit, maar omdat er zoveel verschillende soorten bomen te zien waren, konden we ons goed voorstellen dat het er in andere jaargetijden prachtig zou kunnen zijn. Gelukkig scheen de zon en maakte dat onze hele wandeling wat minder sip.<\/span><\/p>\n

Na een ruime kilometer stonden we opeens in de volle zon op het open veld. We wisten even niet zo goed wat we aanmoesten met al die vitamine D en liepen daarom een stukje het veld op, wat eigenlijk niet echt de bedoeling was. Toch was het even fijn om te doen en zorgden we ervoor dat we het offici\u00eble pad niet uit het oog verloren en de paaltjes goed in de gaten konden houden.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Al vrij snel moesten we rechtsaf terug het bos in, waar we onze weg vervolgden tot we opeens uitkwamen bij een lange trap naar beneden. Deze vonden we nogal steil en spannend, maar we schuifelden dapper naar beneden. Midden in de zandafgraving, in het water dat zich daar verzameld had, zou het Zwerfsteneneiland zich moeten bevinden. Dit hebben we eerlijk gezegd helemaal gemist. Het viel niet op, we liepen er niet echt langs en het stond ook niet aangegeven, terwijl we ons er eigenlijk wel een beetje op hadden verheugd. Ook met de andere wandeling, de gele route die daar is uitgezet, kom je niet eens op zwaaiafstand. Beetje jammer.

Om uit de zandafgraving te komen, moesten we weer met een trap omhoog. Gelukkig was deze veel minder lang en veel minder steil. Vervolgens moesten we de openbare weg volgen om terug te komen bij de parkeerplaats. Al met al een prima route om even wat bomen van dichtbij te zien, maar van een echte onderdompeling in de natuur is niet echt sprake, met die snelweg op de achtergrond.
